Introducing the “End at Last Location” feature in PTV Route Optimization OptiFlow API

Efficient route planning is at the heart of logistics, and our team is dedicated to continuously enhancing the PTV Route Optimization OptiFlow API to meet the dynamic needs of our users, such as adapting to fluctuating delivery schedules or managing same-day pickup demands. Today we announce the launch of a new feature: “End at Last Location.”

What is “End at Last Location”?

The “End at Last Location” feature empowers logistics planners with greater flexibility, leading to measurable benefits such as cost savings, reduced driving times, and more efficient use of resources. It allows users to start planning their day with deliveries only—sending drivers out into the field. As new pickup orders come in during the day, the algorithm can seamlessly integrate them into the route plan. By the end of the day, drivers can return to the depot with a full truckload, maximizing efficiency and minimizing empty runs.

This feature is particularly valuable for businesses dealing with unpredictable or same-day pickup orders, as it enables dynamic and adaptive route planning that ensures optimized operations. For example, a grocery delivery service can use this feature to first handle pre-scheduled deliveries in the morning and then dynamically integrate last-minute pickup requests from suppliers, ensuring that vehicles return to the depot fully loaded by the end of the day.

How does it work?

This new capability is based on the “Start and end concept” within the PTV Route Optimization OptiFlow API. To use this feature, simply omit the end location so your routes conclude at the last delivery stop. Later, when you receive pickup orders, you can define the end location—such as your depot—to ensure all routes are completed as needed. This phased approach helps you simplify planning while maintaining flexibility for changing logistics.
